WILSON LOCK

July 28 - We had light rain most of the day. About 3 PM we approached Wilson lock, one of the largest locks in the world (93 ft lift). The main chamber was closed for repairs. All traffic had to go through their auxiliary chamber which was much smaller and had two sections. The first chamber raised us about halfway up, and then we moved into the second chamber for the rest of the lift. All the commercial tows had to be broken down into pieces to go through, which takes hours (one barge at a time.) It may take 10-15 hours for one tow to go through. We had to wait about two hours before entering, and we were surprised when they called us to enter as there were several other tows waiting. It was pouring rain while we were in the chamber. It took about an hour.
